Holiday Planning and Gift Guide
Just like any parent of a child with disabilities, parent mentors must help family members and friends learn about disability etiquette and help people in the inner rings of their “relationship circle” experience successful gift giving.
I was talking to the mom of a child in preschool with significant medical needs and she said, “You know, people mean well but they buy these gifts and they just don’t understand about my son’s abilities and needs. He doesn’t touch the toys… that is not what he is interested in. It is hard to explain that.”
Our children need an IEP for gift giving.
If you think about it that way, you would start with
“PRESENT” LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE (get it?)
My child __________________________________________________________ likes
Swinging Tactile play
Plays a sport _____________________________________________
Audio Books ____________________________________________
You might include information on what type of technology your child requires to listen to music independently
Favorite foods ___________________________________________________________
Favorite things to do ______________________________________________________
Favorite color ____________________________________________________________
My child DOES NOT like
Being in crowded spaces
Clothing with tags Socks with seams Pants that have to be zippered or buttoned (elastic waist is best)
Other things to avoid: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Here are some resources to help you assist in the learning opportunities for families and friends.
