PPA Countdown Begins
Posted on March 11, 2016, by GAPMP
I began as a parent mentor in 2004. Since that time, I have been surrounded by exceptional parent mentors who never cease to inspire and challenge me. I am continually attempting to reach the high standards set before me by those fellow parent mentors whom I love so dear.
When I was nominated to receive the Phil Pickens award in 2011, I immediately declined. I struggled over whether or not to accept the nomination, because I knew there were so many other parent mentors who deserved this recognition and distinct honor. I finally decided to complete the paperwork out of respect for my director, Dr. Smith, and our school system. I reluctantly agreed to move forward with the process knowing all along that there were many more qualified nominees who should ultimately obtain this award.
As I looked through the paperwork, I began to make notes about projects and activities and situations that fell in line with the requested information. However, for the life of me, I had a difficult time writing about myself. I, again, found myself wishing I was not in this awkward position and mentioned to my director and coordinator how humbled and unworthy I felt. My coordinator took the application and my notes and began to complete the application for me
Having known Phil Pickens, this nomination and award was an honor that I never expected. I knew the kind of man Phil was and how his life impacted others in such a positive way. After receiving this award, I was even more challenged to support families and educators. The bar had once again been raised, and the impact of reaching these families is a daily goal I desperately want achieve.
Parent mentors across the state of Georgia are working hard and doing many great and wonderful things. Please take the time to nominate at least one parent mentor from your region. It is not a popularity contest. It is an effort to highlight and encourage our fellow parent mentors in the work we do every day. The work we are called to do.
