Family Friendly Fright Fest

Meet Crystal Williams from Putnam County

Crystal offered families in Putnam County Schools and those in surrounding school districts, access to a sensory friendly trick or treating event.

Using social media as the primary way of getting the word out, she provided a welcoming environment for families who might otherwise shy away from coming to a public event.

She collaborated with the local recreation department and invited nearby school districts.

Here are some tips for creating a sensory friendly trick or treating event

  • Prioritize minimizing loud noises
  • Eliminate flashing lights
  • Keep crowds small (designate small groups to walk around together)
  • Offer a calm environment
  • Offer a variety of treat options for those with food allergies
  • Allow children to choose treats rather than requiring the child to say, “Trick or Treat” in order to receive a treat.
